Ranked as one of the greatest places in the world to visit, New Zealand has long been staking its claim as one of the most appealing holiday destinations for the world’s one-percenter travellers, thanks largely to our iconic luxury lodge scene. For decades, Huka Lodge, Eichardt’s, Kauri Cliffs, Wharekauhau, Cape Kidnappers, Millbrook and Kinloch Manor — to name just a few — have positioned New Zealand as a destination of both isolated beauty and unique luxury’

Off to another of the country’s leading golf lodges, the striking Kinloch Manor & Villas overlooking Lake Taupo, also on the North Island. Sister property to the famous Treetops, the lodge rises like a fortress from a steep hillside above the stunning Jack Nicklaus- designed championship course, gemsmooth greens tucked between tussocky folds and little gullies of native heather.

If there is one thing we have learnt over the last year it is how to deal with being out of our comfort zones. For most guests, though, the main focus is the challenging par-72 golf course that curls around below: the only Jack Nicklaus-designed course in New Zealand, featuring 172 bunkers.

Kinloch Manor & Villas, created by the much-awarded owners of Treetops Lodge & Estate, offers truly exceptional dining overlooking Lake Taupo and beyond. And importantly the restaurant uses near 100% pesticide and organic produce (where appropriate), with farm and garden reared produce of their own, plus the private 2,000 ha nearby owner’s property that adheres to the ‘Estate to Plate’ dining philosophy - of course matched with New Zealand and the world’s best wines.

You do not go to Kinloch to enjoy a nice game of golf. Dotted strategically around the 18 holes of its Jack Nicklaus-designed, championship course are two lakes and 172 bunkers. These lie eagerly in wait, ready to trap any slightly errant ball.
